Bitsy is a Burmese python.

Bitsy is six feet long and as big around as a grapefruit.

Bitsy eats live rodents for dinner.

“But I brought you a frozen mouse to feed her,” Mrs. Baxter says, smiling. “That’ll be easier.”

Alex looks at his wrist where a watch would be if he had one. Maybe it’s an imaginary watch. “Wow. I have to go. I promised my mom I’d be home by five.”

Mrs. Baxter looks at her watch. Hers is real. “It’s only four.”

“Yeah . . . well . . .” Alex is already buckling his bicycle helmet. “She worries if I’m late.” He jumps on his bike and takes off down the sidewalk.

“I don’t think Alex likes Bitsy,” Rasheena says, squatting down to look through the glass of the cage. “She’s really pretty if you look close.”

Mrs. Baxter’s face lights up. “Isn’t she? I know some people are afraid of snakes, but Bitsy has been handled since she was a baby and she’s so gentle with people. She’s a wonderful companion. I was heartbroken when Big Bubba died.”

“Big Bubba?” Rupert says.

“My hermit crab. He was a cute little guy.”

“Oh.” Rupert looks into the tank, and I know what he’s thinking. Bitsy looks a whole lot more like a Big Bubba than a Bitsy. But I guess you can’t just go naming all your pets “Big Bubba.” You’d have to have Big Bubba the First, Big Bubba the Second, Big Bubba the —

“Let’s get her inside, okay?” Mrs. Baxter reaches into the car and pulls out one end of Bitsy’s cage. “Everybody grab a corner.”

The cage is heavy, but together, we get it out of the car. I hold my breath while we walk past the big living room window, but when I sneak a look inside, Grandma Joyce is on the couch reading her book and never looks up. Not even when we walk by with a ginormous snake. That must be a seriously good book.
